All numbers were impressed into the wood and a six digit number assigned, though no particular order was given and some instruments had a letter prefix. The orange labels inside hollow bodied instruments was discontinued in and were replaced by white and orange rectangle labels on the acoustics, and small black, purple and white rectangle labels were placed on electric models. A few bolt on neck instruments had a date ink stamped on the heel area. In , Gibson first introduced the serialization method that is in practice today. This updated system utilizes an impressed eight digit numbering scheme that covers both serializing and dating functions. The pattern is as follows:

But, with more than 75 years of shipping records in the Gibson books, and dozens of variations on numerical schemes used over the years, serial numbers sometimes do little to shed light on the origin of a mysterious Gibson. With vintage Gibsons selling at auction for as much as half a million dollars, Davidson will sometimes roll up his sleeves and poke around in the ledgers, but only as time allows. The earliest volumes contain hundreds of yellowed pages covered front and back with rows of handwritten numbers.
It can take Davidson several hours to locate a specific serial number, if he can find it at all. Even then, there may be four other guitars—of all different models—with the same number sequence. Serial numbers can pull up multiple guitars from multiple years. To combat the problem, the company upped its serial number sequence last year from eight digits to nine. For the most part, it looks real.
But there are some obvious indicators—if it starts with a five, for instance. Or it might be an eight-digit serial number that indicates it was built on the th day of the year. Our customers want serial numbers to be formatted a certain way—like they used to be. Follow Gibson on Facebook and Twitter for guitar giveaways, new product launches, music news and much more!

He bought it new in I really feel like a guitar should be played and should have a life and not just look good. These guitars had a few interesting characteristics like no channel rout and a blend knob instead of a tone knob. The blend disappeared around Plus, you get flathead screws all the way around, including the truss rod! This example is one of the lightest Broadcaster guitars I have ever played. I am lucky to own it, and is one of my cherished Fender guitars in my collection.
It still has the original receipt and pictures of the original owner. It has been in many books, and is widely considered one of the very first if not the first black Stratocaster guitars ever made.

GIBSON SERIALIZATION. Identifying Gibson instruments by serial number is tricky at best and downright impossible in some cases. The best methods of identifying them is by using a combination of the serial number, the factory order.
Tweet on Twitter Well, we near the end of the long tale of Hamer USA Guitars, a saga that began in the early s and is today a great success story in American guitardom. The Eclipse Model GECS was a new asymmetrical offset double-cutaway design with short horns, the upper somewhat larger and rounded, the lower more pointed, and a rounded lower bout. The body and glued-in neck were all-mahogany with a black-faced three-and-three Hamer headstock and screened logo.
The Eclipse sported two Seymour Duncan mini-humbucking pickups with three-way select, one volume and one tone control. An Eclipse String was also available with the same specs. It had just slightly offset double cutaways with a slightly extended upper horn and a slightly deeper treble cutaway. Otherwise it was similar to the Sunburst. The body was mahogany with a carved, figured koa top with a glued-in mahogany neck. The Mirage was equipped with three Seymour Duncan single-coil-sized humbuckers all perpendicular to the strings — a Hot Rail at the bridge and two split-rail Vintage Rails.
These were controlled by a five-way select and one volume and one tone control.

Even if synth programming can’t replace a real drummer, the rhythm work is well done. This double CD documents the pre-Shub Niggurath era. After a while, the idea of merging the two combos into a big band emerged. The sound quality of the live tracks is unfortunately mediocre but the label thought that their historical importance justified their official publishing.

Another resource for IDing and dating guitars is Gibson’s computer database, which catalogues scores of serial numbers from on through the present. “It doesn’t always date the guitar,” says Davidson.
History[ edit ] The Gibson Guitar Corporation released several new styles during the s to compete with Fender ‘s solid-body instruments, such as the Telecaster and Stratocaster. After success with the Les Paul in the s, Gibson’s popularity began to wane in the s. Fender’s colors, shapes and multiple pickups were endorsed by notable guitarists.
Gibson’s guitars, most of which were hollow or semi-hollow designs, seemed old-fashioned. Coupled with higher prices, this contributed to a decline in sales. A Gibson Firebird V played by Johnny Winter onstage in Gibson had made forays into radical body shapes — the Flying V and Explorer in the s — which met limited initial success.
The president of Gibson, Ted McCarty , hired car designer Ray Dietrich to design a guitar that would have popular appeal. Under Dietrich, the Firebird took on the lines of mid s car tailfins. Dietrich took the Explorer design and rounded the edges. The most unusual aspect is that the guitar is “backward” in that the right-hand treble horn of the body is longer than the other. Thus, the original Firebirds were unofficially referred to as “reverse”.
The Firebird looks like an Explorer with softer “points,” or maybe a reverse Fender Jaguar or Jazzmaster.

According to the former, she was “not possible” due to their meetings previously in his personal timeline, with two such encounters seeing her die. Though assured by the empathic psychic Emma Grayling and the TARDIS scanner that Clara was just an “ordinary girl”, the Doctor couldn’t believe that to be true and thought her to be “the only mystery worth solving”. Hide While a physically ordinary human woman from the 21st century , Clara chose to enter the Doctor’s timeline in his tomb on Trenzalore in order to try to reverse the damage done to his timeline by the Great Intelligence.
This caused the time winds to shatter her into millions of what River Song referred to as “echos” or “splinters” that were dispersed throughout his personal timeline. These echos corrected the damage caused by the Great Intelligence, but were not the original Clara. She was trapped in the Doctor’s timeline, but rescued shortly thereafter.
Aside from his incendiary playing and exhaustive release schedule, Joe Bonamassa is known for his staggering collection of guitars and amps. Though Joe has enough to warrant calling his collection “The Bona-seum” he does have some favorites.
The Custom is the guitar he is generally associated with. Gibson has also produced two Billie Joe Armstrong Signature Les Paul Junior models one double cutaway, and one single cutaway as well as a very limited run of signature acoustic guitars. Since his death, Gibson has discontinued all Chet Atkins models and Gretsch has resumed the manufacturing and distribution of the Chet Atkins line.
Beck’s fascination with the guitar sprang as much from his interest in Les Paul , the man, as from his love of the guitar itself. Beck told an interviewer: After Bennett’s death the guitar was given to musician Anthony Top Topham. This was the guitar Bloomfield used as a member of the Electric Flag, and on the Super Session album and concerts. Bloomfield eventually lost the guitar in Canada; Wolkin and Keenom’s biography revealed a club owner kept the guitar as partial compensation after Bloomfield cut short a round of appearances.
Its whereabouts today are unknown. His main Les Paul model was refinished in an opaque orange to resemble the Gretsch guitars played by his hero Eddie Cochran. His main guitar was a late s non-reverse Firebird. Brian Carroll uses several Les Pauls custom-made by Gibson which feature oversized bodies, fret necks, DiMarzio pickups and his trademark kill switch.
