The massive gun has been showcased at the launch of the pilot project called Operation Indemnis. Britain’s biggest speed camera has been unveiled Police in Gloucester are using the whopping camera to tackle motoring offences such as speeding and tailgating but if the pilot project is successful we could see the fancy kit come to other forces in Yorkshire.

Speed guns have been able to detect how fast cars travel but the new camera produces clear video footage and still photographs of the people inside them. Martin Surl, Police and Crime Commissioner for Gloucestershire where the kit is being tested, said he hoped that it would catch people using their mobile phones. The project takes a new collaborative approach to the policing of the A and A – a major strategic route linking Gloucestershire and Wiltshire as well as the M4 and M5.

At peak times, it carries an estimated 35, vehicles day and has become an accident hotspot. Officers will use the long-distance camera and automatic number plate recognition ANPR to check on what vehicles are on the roads and how they are being driven. They said the main aim was to educate people about how to drive more safely, to prevent accidents that can kill or seriously injure people.

Some drivers will be given advice about their driving while others, who have committed offences, will be prosecuted.

This collective act of remembrance on November 11, broke the previous record of 3, in a human poppy and was a deeply symbolic tribute on the anniversary of the end of the First World War. From 2pm this afternoon volunteers streamed into the Cotswold town market place to form a sea of red, green and black. Each representing a named fallen soldier from around the Cotswolds, or an unknown soldier, this was a chance for the community to come together and unite with one common cause, in an event that will surely be remembered for years to come.

Organisers came up with the ambitious plans under the umbrella ‘We Remember ‘. Daisy May Cooper from the hit BBC hit comedy ‘This Country’ helped to promote the event, with a video a few days before urging people to take part. Speaking to the Standard after the event, she said: It goes to show what a close knit community Cirencester is and how highly we regard the past. It is quite emotional to see so many of our town and other areas coming together to commemorate this special event.

I am speechless and so proud that the young and the old have come out to commemorate and to celebrate.

I’d chosen them purely on design grounds, but with the exception of Capstan, they form a mind-boggling web of company takeovers, at least proving my theory that these stylish designs were created for the big boys. Security is a serious business, and this is globalism in action: Grandaddy of them all is ADT, an American firm formed in , when a bunch of telegraph delivery firms incorporated as the American District Telegraph Company.

By the s they were a huge public concern, already operating in Britain, and in they were taken over by the Hawley Group, an acquisition vehicle run by business mogul Michael Ashcroft — aka controversial Baron Ashcroft of Belize, who was treasurer of the Conservative party while being non-domiciled in Britain and paying no UK tax. He renamed the company ADT Security Systems, registered it in tax haven Bermuda, and in sold it on to globalcorp Tyco who make undersea cables and the like , via a reverse-takeover which gave Tyco Bermudan tax status too.

I’m sure that nowadays everyone at Tyco and ADT is lovely and kind, and doesn’t evade tax or have weeing ice-sculptures.

It’s common enough to hear the phrase ‘raining cats and dogs’, but delving into the history of bizarre and unexplained events in the area our reporter has uncovered a report from over 30 years ago, that documents the time it rained pink frogs in Gloucestershire. According to an article in the Daily Mirror on October 24, , within a period of two weeks, the two towns were pelted with amphibians on two separate occasions.

An the time an unnamed woman told the paper that “tiny rose-coloured frogs” were coming down in torrential rain near Stroud. They were “bouncing off umbrellas and pavements and hopped off in their hundreds to nearby streams and gardens,” she said. Several pages in Unexplained Phenomena: GTNC’s Ian Darling described the frogs as no more than a few grams in weight, and believed that they were albino versions of a common frog, hence the strange pink colouring.

Perplexed by the unbelievable sudden downpour many different suggestions were made as to how the frogs might have come to be in the sky. That year parts of England, including the West Country, had experienced at least four falls of rain containing Saharan sand between May and September and the Fortean Times suggested that the frogs could have been transported with the sand from north Africa. However others have pointed out that it would be extraordinary for the frogs to have survived being carried from the Sahara in atmospheric water droplets for an estimated 20 hours at 60 mph.

Other explanations have also been suggested, although few have been satisfactory – some suggested that small waterspouts and tornados across England had picked up fertilised frogs’ eggs and that they had then hung around in the summer sky for weeks as the tadpoles matured before being dumped in the two Gloucestershire towns. Another idea was that large hail fell, and then after it melting bystanders noticed the frogs on the ground revelling in the moist soil. No explanation was ever fully accepted by the startled inhabitants of the two Cotswold towns but research shows that this is not the first time that frogs have fallen from the sky.

London newspapers reported that on August 17, innumerable little frogs appeared during a thunderstorm in the northern part of London. Another time Mrs S.
